No fewer than 13 individuals lose their lives and ninety-eight wounded in train crash in the nation of Mexico.

A tragic railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's flagship public works projects.

The crash happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link developed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.

“We will meticulously determine the reasons behind this incident,” declared the head of state.

The official reported that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The leader noted plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those involved.

Major Initiative of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the former leader, whose term concluded the previous year. This rail line was a hallmark of his administration's strategic vision for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to kickstart the economy of a comparatively poorer part of the country.

Project Execution and Worries

The construction of both rail lines was managed by the army, marking a notable increase of its responsibilities in civilian projects. They were built at an rapid pace, beating expectations to be partially opened before the end of that presidency.

However, this rushed timetable had also fueled ongoing questions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This involves an previous crash this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-deadly derailments.

Demands for Audit and Pause

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the chief of a major opposition party urged an urgent halt in the building and running of all such projects.

This halt was proposed until the completion of a thorough independent investigation. The party stated that the situation "requires immediate answers."

In reaction, the president maintained that the train had been operating in full compliance with all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the construction and operation of these vital undertakings.
