A recent study indicates that people who stop using popular weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover shed pounds far faster than those who halt traditional diet and exercise plans.
Research printed in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while obese individuals can lose substantial amounts of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Individuals using such drugs should be cognizant of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain means a return to pre-treatment weight within about a year and a half.
Analyzing Approaches
The study, which examined dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the outcomes of these new drugs with other pills.
Scientists note that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise generally experience a more gradual creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
The Reason for the Fast Regain
Doctors propose the way of the drugs accounts for the amplified weight return.
These medications mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels several times higher than normal could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also lessen sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating a significant risk."
A Chronic Condition?
Health authorities recommend the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians contend that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment might need to be life-long.
This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "highlight the chronic character of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
User Experiences
Individuals who have discontinued the medication report a sudden return of appetite.
"It was like a switch flipping and you become starving," recalled an individual.
The struggle is exacerbated if individuals have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Widespread Adoption
Survey data show that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.
- Adoption is more common among females than males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, clinicians stress that while the jabs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent solution and lasting health benefits relies on combined lifestyle support.
