The United States central bank lowered interest rates on midweek, marking the second rate cut this year amid financial volatility originating from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.
Decision Arrives at Extraordinary Time for Central Bank
The move to cut the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a span of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an extraordinary juncture for the central bank. The institution has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs even with persistent inflation.
Central Bank Announcement Notes Labor Market Shifts
In a statement, the Fed stated that the jobless rate had gone up but stays modest. “Job gains have decelerated,” the release reads. “Inflation has moved up and remains moderately high.”
Federal Closure Complicates Fed’s Job
The ongoing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Gathering of key financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are furloughed during the shutdown.
Information Shortage Affects Policy Decisions
The Fed usually studies BLS data to assess labor market conditions, including the number of new jobs added to the market and the present unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and provided a somewhat gloomy overview of the jobs market in the previous month.
The number of jobs added to the market in the summer month was down by more than 100,000 since the spring, and joblessness crept up to 4.3% – the highest since three years ago.
Alternative Reports Indicate Continued Slowdown
Though the bureau was scheduled to release last month’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its publication when the closure started. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor reported earlier this month that the private sector eliminated 32,000 jobs in September, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.
“Both the supply and demand for workers has fallen significantly,” Fed chair Jerome Powell stated recently, which he had previously attributed comes from immigration and tariff policies.
Inflation Report Shows Gradual Rise
Though BLS’s employment data has been suspended, the bureau still issued its price statistics for September that indicated that prices are rising, albeit slowly. Costs rose three percent over the past twelve months, the highest since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
